North Shore Storm wins cross country meet

With the Minnesota High School Sports League allowing only three teams to compete in cross country running meets this fall, the North Shore Storm boys and girls teams have feasted on the limited competition.

For the third week in a row, both varsity teams won handily.

The girls placed in the top six finishers in a meet held in Two Harbors that featured Cromwell and McGregor. Autumn Smith narrowly beat teammate Cedar Gordon to the finish line of the 5K race, winning in 22:13 to Gordon’s 22:14. Lamar Gordon was next in 22:41 and Louise Ramberg was right on her heels in 22:42. Malin Anderson crossed the line in 23:11, and Anna Hay ran 23:44.

Placing 8th through 10th were Olya Wright, 24:29; Trinity Giddings, 24:38, and Jocelyn Carr. Isabel Schttenbauer placed 12th in 26:33, Bryn Fitzgerald-Wells was 13th in 26:55; Amy Oberg was 14th in 28:19, Kylie Viren crossed the line in 15th with a time of 28:55, and Greta Roth finished 17th with a time of 29:51.

The North Shore Storm girls’ team finished with 15 points, the lowest score possible for a cross country meet.

Both the girls’ junior varsity and varsity runners competed together in the varsity race.

Boys’ varsity

Cromwell’s Noah Foster, a sophomore, crossed the finish line in 17:53 to win the boys’ 5 k race by more than 30 seconds.

North Shore Storm runners garnered the next four places. Isaac Swanson was second in 18:26, Nate Bilben third in 18:32; Ian Thorpe fourth in 19:07 and Kevin Viren placed fifth in 19:35. Placing seventh and team’s fifth runner was Tate Crawford, who ran 19:53.

Clay Thorpe placed ninth with a time of 20:33 and Kyler Hansen took 12th place with a time of 21:45.

Because Cromwell couldn’t field a full boys’ team, Foster’s first place and his teammate Tate Bloomquist’s sixth place count in the team scoring. Therefore the North Shore Storm boys won with 15 points while McGregor placed second with 48 points. The team’s first five finishers’ places are added up to get a final score.

5k Junior Varsity Boys

North Shore Storm runners took the top three spots, with Jack Willis winning the boys’ 5k race in 20:43. Elija Smith was second in 21:08 and Tanner DeBoer was third in 21:46.

North Shore Storm runners placing 5th through 11th were Keenan Selin, 22:41; Brayden Schmidt, 23:10; Gus Hahn, 23:21; Ben Oblinger, 23:24; Nicholas Swartz, 23:28; Stirling Pollock, 23:40; and Jonah Schmidt, 24:00.

Finishing 13th through 15th were Haddon Taylor,25:27; Jacob Dorr, 26:44, and Ryan Bilben, 27:09. Aj Mattson took 17th with a time of 8:53, and Avery Zimmer was 18th in 30:42.
