Well, we finally got a rest from the heat this past week on Thursday, September 28. However, with all of the rain that we have had, the poor golf course looked more like an adventure mud run course. This week was an off week for racing for the majority of our varsity squad, so this will give me an opportunity to highlight some of the other significant improvements that we have had on our team. Our kids raced well in the mud; it was hard watching racers trudge through the muddy course and with each step they would take, their foot would slide back about an inch or two.
A number of our girls stood out today. Malin Anderson ran a personal best 5k in 24:23. Brooklyn Smith shaved off over 20 seconds of her best time with a new time of 25:50. Robin Henrikson and Chloe Blackburn worked together as a pack and finished in 26:40 and 26:49. Sidni Hendren had a 20-second personal best and finished along with Saira Smith who had a 35-second improvement with a time of 28:44. Aurora Schelmeske came out of the woodwork today and dropped four minutes off her time finishing in 29:29. Ellen Callender shaved off over two and a half minutes from her personal best this season with a new record of 31:53. These girls were mentally tough today to get through the mud with improved times.
Brenden Seipke led our boys to great races; he shaved 40 seconds off of his season’s best with a time of 18:35. Brenden finished 15th place, even after taking a wrong turn. JC Holman was our fourth runner. He cut 40 seconds to achieve a new best time of 20:36.
Kevin Viren and Andy Kern worked together and finished in 21:11 and 21:21. Tanner DeBoer shaved one minute off of his record with a time of 24:41; he was followed by Trent Spry who also improved with 25:01.
Our junior high kids had a great showing. Ian Thorpe finished 11th place with a 3k time of 12:43. He was followed by teammate Jonah Schmidt in 42nd with a clocking of 14:38.
Our junior high girls took third place in the team competition. Lamar Gordon led the group with a fourth-place finish in 14:14. Gordon was followed by Cece Chmelik in 9th place with a time of 15:24 and Anna Hay, who ran with a smile on her face the whole time loving the mud, was in 19th place in 17:05. Amanda Haveri shaved more than four minutes off her best time with a new time of 18:05.
Our next meet will be on Saturday, October 7 at Enger Golf Course in Duluth. Races begin at 10 a.m. Come and cheer on the North Shore runners!
