North Shore Storm receives academic honors

Not only did the North Shore Storm boys’ and girls’ cross country teams post excellent results on a wide variety of hill and dale 5k (3.1 miles) race courses this fall, but they were also equally as strong in the classroom.

Head coach April Wahlstrom reported that both boys’ and girls’ teams received Gold Honors for having team grade point averages (GPA) of 3.75 and above.

But that wasn’t all of the classroom news.

“We also have three All-State Academic winners in Jake Paron, Noah Smith and Will Surbaugh,” said Wahlstrom, adding, “Our top girls were not old enough to be eligible.”

The North Shore Storm is a combined team made up of athletes from Two Harbors and Cook County High School. The boys’ team won the Section 7A championship and placed fifth at State in the Class A division.

The girls’ team tied for second in the sections but qualified for state based on their sixth runner finishing ahead of the Eveleth high school (who they tied with) sixth runner, so they too, advanced to State where they finished in 13th place.

All in all it was a great showing for both teams who demonstrated that they can go the distance in the classroom as well as on the race course.
