On September 12 the North Shore Storm boys’ and girls’ cross country team traveled to Eveleth to compete against 13 other schools in the Eveleth Invitational on a day that was windy, rainy, and cool, with temps in the mid-50s.

Girls win

The North Shore Storm girls’ team won their second Class A meet in a row, finishing with a low score of 43 points against six other teams. International Falls placed second with 76 points and Ely was third with 86 points.

Once again the team’s top runner was sophomore Autumn Smith who placed fourth in the 5K with a time of 21:25.2. Sisters Cedar Gordon, a junior, placed 5th in 21:40 and Lamar Gordon, a freshman, took 8th place in 22:25.8.

Sophomore Malin Anderson placed 10th with a time of 22:31.8 and the Storms’ fifth runner was Kate Walsberg, a senior, who placed 16th.

The team’s top five runners’ finishing places are added up to come up with a team score.

Louise Ramberg, a junior, placed 18th overall with a time of 23:28.7 and Anna Hay, a sophomore was the 27th finisher with a time of 24:26.2. While the sixth and seventh runners’ finishes don’t count in the team score, the more runners they beat from the other team’s top five runners, the better place the North Shore team will finish.

Boys finish a close third

Brenden Seipke ran the 5K course in 17:20 to take third in the individual standings. However, because the Crosby-Ironton runner who beat him didn’t have a full team behind him, Brenden’s finish was counted as second place in the team competition.

In an extremely close team finish, the Storm ended with 78 points. Proctor was second with 76 and Ely won with 73 points.

Behind Brenden, the Storm’s next four point scorers were Noah Smith, 10th; Tate Crawford, 18th; Nate Bilben, 20th; and Kevin Viren, who placed 28th. Finishing as the Storm’s sixth runner was JC Holmen in 34th place and Ian Thorpe, who took 37th overall.
