North Shore Storm girls’ team finishes third at Swain

Running on a cold, windy, wet day, the combined Cook County, Silver Bay, Two Harbors North Shore Storm girls’ team placed third out of 33 Class A teams at the Swain Invitational Cross Country meet held Saturday, October 5 at Duluth’s Inger Park golf course.

Ava Hill, Mesabi East, was the individual winner, finishing the hilly 5000- meter (3.1 miles) course in 20:17.

Lake City won the team title with 118 points. Stewartville was second with 174, and the Storm took third with 226.

Sisters Lamar and Cedar Gordon led the Storm with a 41st and 42nd place, crossing the line together in 23:11. Autumn Smith placed 48th in 23:23, Malin Anderson finished 51st in 23:35. Louise Ramberg was the fifth Storm finisher (top five places are added up for the team score), placing 64th in 24:03.

Kate Walsberg, 79th, 24:33; Anna Hay, 115th in 25:35, rounded out the varsity team.

Boys’ varsity

The North Shore Boys’ team finished 15th out of 32 Class A teams.

Luke Olson led Ely to the team title after taking first place with a time of 17:38.

Noah Smith led the Storm team to a 15th-place finish out of 32 squads in the team competition. Noah placed 22nd, crossing the line in 19:10. Nate Bilben was 53rd in 19:10; Ian Thorpe was the 87th finisher in 20:53; Kevin Viren placed 104th in 21:22; Henry Dearruda- Weaver took 109th place in 21:31; JC Holmen finished 129th in 21:59; and Brayden Schmidt placed 151st in 22:33.

Junior high girls

The North Shore Storm finished seventh out of nine teams in the girls’ middle school race.

Trinity Giddings ran 13:47 to place 17th in the girls’ 3000-meter run. Lexi Surbaugh ran 13:56 to finish 22nd; Jocelyn Carr placed 44th, in 14:52; Amery Oberg was 77th in 16:05; Nadia Latvala placed 97th in 16:48; Liv Hedstrom finished 113th in 17:39; Shawnda Everson was the 114th finisher with a time of 17:39; Nysjah Lillas placed 118th in 18:30, and Labia Eiman took 130th place in 22:55.

Junior high boys

Travis Elling finished in 46th place with a time of 13:11 to lead the boys’ junior varsity to an 11th-place finish out of 20 teams.

Crossing the line in order behind Elling was Elijah Smith, 58th, 13:38; Bryan Lillis, 97th, 14:29; Clay Thorpe, 119th, 14:45; Cody Lange 134th 15:25; Isaac Schmidt, 137th, 15:32; AJ Mattson, 142nd, 15:40; Andrew Hallberg, 152nd, 16:11; Avery Zimmer, 166th, 16:58; Silas Eckstrom, 193rd, 19:59; and Reed Cruikshank, 205th, 26:03.

Boys’ junior varsity

Tanner DeBoer placed 11th with a time of 21:43 to lead the Storm to 4th place in the boys’ junior varsity race. There were 14 teams entered in the small school division.

Finishing in order behind DeBoer were Chance Hanel, 14th, 21:51; Trenton Gomez, 22:24; Tristan Surbaugh, 50th, 23:13; Gus Hahn, 57th, 23:43; Stirling Pollock, 76th, 24:42; Pete Sutton, 77th, 24:44; Danny Berka, 81st, 24:56; Ben Obinger, 82nd, 24:56; Kyler Hansen 91st, 25:42; Jonah Schmidt, 92nd, 25:44; Trent Spry, 94th, 25:51; Haddon Taylor, 95th, 25:51.8; Silas Brandt, 130th, 27:34; Ryan Bilben, 136th, 28:43; and Riley Tarver, finished in 140th place in 29:02.

Girls’ junior varsity

The North Shore Storm junior varsity girls’ team took 5th out of 11 teams in the Class C division.

Abbie Crawford led the team with a 13th-place finish in the junior varsity girls’ race, crossing the finish line in 24:57; Laura Erikson placed 29th in 26:01; placing 29th was Laura Erikson in 26:01; Isabel Schottenbauer, 31st, 26:17; Bryn Fitzgerald- Wells, 47th, 27:14; Robin Henrikson, 55th, 28:15; Elsa Garry, 56th, 28:15; Kylie Viren, 62nd, 28:35; Sidni Hendren, 65th, 28:39; Cecelia Chmelik, 75th, 29:13; Greta Roth, 86th, 30:11; and Aurora Schelmske placed 87th with a time of 30:14.

Hibbing Invitational

North Shore Storm coach April Wahlstrom rested most of her varsity runners for the Sept. 26 Hibbing Rotary Invitational, but she noted that the kids who did race, ran well.

Girls’ 5,000 meters

Abbie Crawford placed 30th to lead the North Shore Storm girls’ team. Abbie crossed the line in 23:19. The rest of the team and their finishing places are as follows: Isabel Schottenbauer took 59th in 25:08; Laura Erickson placed 63rd with a time of 25:31; Kylie Viren took 65th place in 25:52; Robin Henrikson placed 79th in 27:10; Hazel Oberholtzer finished 80th in 27:14; and Elsa Garry placed 84th crossing the finish line in 27:20.

Boys’ 5,000 meters

The North Shore boys’ team finished 11th out of 17 teams. After a long layoff due to injury, Isaac Swanson returned to the team and ran 17:56, to place 11th overall.

Running and finishing within about one minute of each other were the following Storm runners: Henry DeArruda-Weaver placed 55th in 20:03; Ian Thorpe took 61st place in 20:15; Tanner DeBoer finished in 77th place in 20:48; Brayden Schmidt took 78th place in 20:49; Chance Hanel took 84th place with a time of 21:04; and Trenton Gomez placed 86th in 21:09.

Junior high boys

Tristen Surbaugh placed 27th with a time of 21:14 in the junior high boys race to lead the team to a seventh place finish out of 10 schools. Finishing in 39th place was Pete Sutton, crossing the line in 22:03; Keegan Morrison placed 43rd in 22:31; Kyler Hansen took 44th place in 22:33; Gus Hahn placed 45th in 22:34; Jonah Schmidt took 46th in 22:39; and Danny Berka finished in 48th place with a time of 22:40.

Duluth East won the Junior High Girls’ team title with a perfect 15 points, meaning they took the top five spots. Actually the Greyhounds’ top 11 junior high runners took the top 11 spots. The mighty Greyhound program has been down, but based on these results, the future looks mighty bright.

Leading the North Shore Storm to fourth place was Cecelia Chmelik, who placed 15th in 27:22. Ellen Callender was right behind Chmelik in 16th place, crossing the line in 27:36. Madison Christenson finished in 18th place in 28:35; Saira Smith placed 19th in 28:37; Aurora Schelmeske placed 23rd in 30:36; Olivia Nesgoda took 24th with a time of 30:47; and Greta Roth finished in 25th place in 30:54.

Junior high boys

North Shore Storm runners placed 11th in a field of 13 teams in the two-mile run. Elijah Smith finished 39th in 13:00; Travis Elliing finished with the same time in 40th; Jaden Oberg took 47th place in 13:11; Bryan Lillis placed 50th in 13:31; Cody Lange placed 65th in 14:10; Isaac Schmidt took 75th place in 14:53; and Andrew Hallberg placed 76th with a time of 15:01.

Junior high girls

The North Shore Storm girls placed seventh out of eight teams in the junior high race. Taking sixth place to lead the Storm was Trinity Giddings, who had a finishing time of 13:39. Placing 28th was Jocelyn Carr in 14:51. Amery Oberg took 40th place in 15:47; Shawnda Everson placed 46th with a time of 16:42; Nysjah Lillis finished 47th in 17:11 and placing 48th was Nadia Latvalla with a time of 17:21.
