Katie Carpenter, a wing on the North Shore Storm 12U girls’ hockey team, has been part of something special this year.
The North Shore Storm 12U hockey team recently earned a trip to the Regional Tournament in Warroad, March 3-5.
Despite entering the district tournament as an underdog, the Storm first dispatched their pesky rival, the Duluth Icebreakers, 5-3. After a tough loss to powerhouse Cloquet, they beat a resilient Proctor/Hermantown team by a score of 4-1 to punch their ticket to the regional tournament. That win was even more rewarding for the Storm as they’d lost three close games to Proctor/Hermantown to go 0-3 against them in the regular season.
In the final seeding game, the Storm narrowly lost to a very tough Moose Lake team, 2-0. “This game really could have gone either way with a lot of close plays throughout, showing the girls they can compete with any team if they work hard and play smart,” said the Storm’s coach, Shane Hoff.
The North Shore 12U team is comprised of girls from Cook County, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors so one can imagine the time, effort and miles involved just to get the girls to practices and games. “The dedication of the players, their parents (locker room moms), coaches, coordinators, and schedulers has been outstanding, resulting in a fun and rewarding year for everyone – and they’re peaking at just the right time! If you see any of these kids out and about, be sure to congratulate them on a great year,” said Hoff.
Katie is the daughter of Brian and Leah Carpenter, Grand Marais. She is the only Cook County player on the North Shore Storm 12U team this year.
