On September 8, the North Shore Storm (Cook County, Silver Bay and Two Harbors) cross country team traveled to Superior, Wisconsin, to participate in the 16-team Dan Conway Classic high school cross country race. The meet was held on the Pattison Park Golf Course and is named after Dan Conway, a legendary age-group runner from Superior, Wisconsin. Among his many fine distance running accomplishments Dan won the World Veteran’s 10K Championships in Perpignan, France, with a time of 30:26 at age 44. Conway, who passed away in 2018, began long distance running when he was 38. Before that, Conway had been a high school sprinter and halfback in college.
Boys varsity 5K
Ian Thorpe led the North Shore Storm boys varsity with a sixth-place finish. Ian ran 17:38 for the 5K (3.1 miles) race. The race was won by Oliver Mistake of Duluth East in 16:34.5.
The following six placers for North Shore were: Cyrus Myers placed 27th crossing the finish line in 19:09.8. Elijah Smith placed 32nd with a time of 19:35.9. Keean Selin placed 35th in 19:40, and Nick Swartz was the team’s fifth runner, placing 45th in 20:36.2. Each team’s score is determined by adding up the finish of the top five finishers. Brayden Schmidt was the sixth runner, finishing 49th with a time of 20:57.9. Everett Hurth took 55th in 21:12.6.
Duluth East took the team title with a score of 39. North Shore placed fifth with a total of 136.
North Shore Girls
Olya Wright placed fourth to lead the North Shore girl’s team to a second place finish in the team competition. Duluth East was the overall winner with 29, while the Storm had 77 points.
Olya ran the 5K course in 21: 11. Superior’s Tayler McMeekin placed first with a time of 20:16.4.
Lamar Gordon took 9th place, crossing the finish line in 21:34. Jocelyn Carr and Sierra Gaetz placed 19th and 20th. Carr ran the course in 22:55.7, and Gaetz finished in 22:57.3. Brianna Monson placed 32nd with a time of 23:42.9. Quincy Hurth was hot on Gaetz’s heels, running 23:43.1. London Smith placed 74th with a time of 35:40.7.
Boys Junior Varsity
Clay Thorpe’s 16th place led North Shore to a third-place team finish in the Boy’s Junior Varsity Race. Clay ran the course in 20:20. The team’s next finishers in order were: Adam Oberg, 39th, 22:13.8; Georgi Dimitrov, 44th in 22:34.6; Grant Oberg, 46th in 22:37.4; Andrew Hallberg, 52nd in 22:55.4; Isaac Schmidt, 60th in 23:19.7; Edwin Erickson, 67th in 23:38.3; Finn Taylor, 68th in 23:55.7; Haddon Taylor, 76th in 24:30.9; Rylan Brown, 77th in 24:37; Odin Hanssen, 104th in 28:45 and Robert Rodriguez, 107 in 29:26.7.
Girls Junior Varsity
Lexi Surbaaugh placed 7th in the 5K, crossing the finish line in 24:02.6. Placing in order was Valerie Hurth, 16th in 25:35.1; Genevieve Silence, 17th in 25:35.5; Claire Lindstrom, 25th in 26:37.7; Emma Crook was 32nd in 27:21.9; Signe Myers finished 49th in 29:14.2; Aili Gischia was the 66th finisher crossing the line in 32:50; Shawanda Everson placed 68th in 34:35.5, and Lizzy Radke placed 73rd in 40:34.7.
North Shore placed eight in the team competition won by Duluth East.
Boys Junior High 2.5K
The North Shore’s first runner in the boy’s 2.7k race was Talon DeBoer. Talon took 18th place and ran a time of 11:27.2 to help his team to a fifth-place finish.
Elias Pszwaro placed 19th, only two seconds back of Talon. Next, Ethan Fish placed 25th in 11:36.1. General Higgins placed 28th in 11:41.4, and Chance Jacobsen placed 31st in 11:51.6. Erik Gishia finished 43rd in 12:34.9. Sidney Litterest was 45th in 12:41.9, Eero Moody finished 46th in 12:59.7; Dylan O’Brien placed 51st in 13:18.9. Lucas Hackett took 70th in 16:04.2; Lute Jansen placed 72nd in 16:18.6; Logan Smith placed 75th in 18:44.5; Reed Cruikshank placed 76th in 21:03.8, and Eddie Larson was 77th in 22:44.5.
Girls Junior High 2.5K
The girls placed eighth in the team meet with 198 points, while Carlton-Wrenshall won with a low score of 35.
With her 20th-place finish, Ryleigh Thorpe led the girls’ junior high team. Ryleigh finished the 2.5K race in 12:20.4. Next for North Shore was Grace Swartz, 25th in 12:52.3; Amelia Saamanen was 55th in 14:19.7; Sophia Lindstrom placed 56th in 14:27.9; Hiver Moody placed 58th crossing the finish line in 14:28.3. Iris Works placed 59th in 14:28.6. Liz Swaerz placed 65th in 14:39.3. Zoey Kacures took 70th in 14:52 with Anni Dix taking 74th in 14:57.7. Leah Belmore placed 80th in 15:41.7. Maya Rodriguez placed 86th in 16:19.2. Patience Sifferath took 95th place running a time of 17:51. Hazel Liechty placed 99th and finished with a time of 18:03.9.
