On Saturday, October 7 our North Shore runners competed at the Swain Invitational at Enger Golf Course. It was a cool day with a muddy course and our kids rose to the top.

To start the day our junior high girls finished in first place ahead of 12 other teams. Autumn Smith won the 3k event in 12:01 to lead them. Smith was followed by Cedar Gordon in third place with a time of 12:09 and Louise Ramberg finished in fifth place with a time of 12:51. Izzy Schottenbauer was our next runner in 11th place with a time of 13:13 and Lamar Gordon rounded out our team points in 23rd place with a time of 13:46.

Other strong performances include Cece Chmelik who shaved off 40 seconds of her time finishing in 14:41 and Kylie Viren who had a personal best with a time of 17:22.

Next our high school girls took second place behind Lake City. The Storm were led by Claire LaVigne who finished second overall with a time of 23:05. Kate Walsberg placed seventh finishing in 24:17. Maya McHugh finished in eighth place with a time of 24:20. Brooklyn Smith crossed the line in 27:06 and Chloe Blackburn finished in 28:19.

Our varsity boys finished the day as the champions of the “A” competition. They managed to beat Mora, Esko, and 27 other teams.

Jake Paron went out fast and settled into a healthy lead at the 2k mark but then at the 4k mark, Anderson Harris from the Math and Science Academy snuck up and took the lead to the finish. Paron finished in second place with a time of 17:21.

Noah Smith crossed the line in 18:07 to garner 10th place. Will Surbaugh finished 24th in 18:56; Isaac Swanson had a breakthrough day with his finish time of 18:57, and Brenden Seipke was our fifth runner of the day in 19:29. It was a close race. We will have a rematch against Esko on Wednesday, October 11 at 1 p.m. at Pincushion Mountain, as it is our Polar League conference meet.
