On a perfect day for running Will Surbaugh, a senior, and Noah Smith, a junior, broke away from the boys’ field early in the North Shore Challenge high school cross country meet. The two ran side by side when they could until the last quarter mile when Surbaugh surged ahead to win the hilly 5k trail race in 17:48, with Smith finishing second in 17:55.
The race was held on Thursday, August 30 on the rugged Pincushion Mountain trails.
Isaac Swanson, a sophomore, placed fourth in 18:36.7; senior Leif Anderson finished 11th in19:38.6 and Kevin Viren, a sophomore, placed 13th in 19:33.6 to round out the boys’ top five finishers.
Other North Shore Boys’ finishers were Henry DeArruda-Weaver, a junior, who placed 22nd in 20:33.4; JC Homan, a junior, finished 26th in 31:04.4; sophomore Tate Crawford was 32nd in 21:44.5 and Tanner DeBoer, a sophomore, finished 43rd in 23:17.4.
For the first time ever the North Shore Storm boys’ team defeated mighty Duluth East, 29 to 57, with the low score winning. This year the combined boys and girls East Greyhound team numbered about 120 runners.
Moose Lake-Willow River/ Barnum 72, Proctor 90, and Carlton/ Wrenshall 103, rounded out the boys’ field.
Girls’ varsity results
Although the race for first place wasn’t exciting–Molly Weberg, a senior from Duluth East broke away early and led the field by almost 40 seconds when she crossed the finish line in 21:16—the race to see who would team the team championship was a nail-biter.
North Shore ninth grader, Autumn Smith, and sophomore Cedar Gordon, finished second and third in 21:53.4 and 21:54.6. Senior Claire LaVigne placed eighth in 22:33.2 with Kate Walseberg, a junior and Lamar Gordon, a ninth grader, placing 14th and 15th to make up the team’s top five runners. Walsberg’s time was 23:03.1 and Gordon’s time 223:07.6.
Each team’s first five finishers’ places are added up to make the score with the lowest team score winning.
East won by one point, 33-34. Their top five placed first, fifth, and 10, 11, and 12.
Moose Lake/Willow River/ Barnum placed third with 71 points while Carlton-Wrenshall was fourth with 106 points.
Other North Shore Storm finishers included Louise Ramberg, a sophomore, who placed 20th in 23:41.5.; Abbie Crawford, a junior who was 24th in 24:49.9; Izzy Schottenbauer, sophomore, was 32nd in 25:51.9; Brooklyn Smith, placed 33rd in 26:18.1; Anna Hay, ninth grade, placed 37th in 26:51.8; Cecelia Chmelik, ninth grade, placed 38 in 26:56.4; Hazel Obelholtzer, sophomore, placed 49th in 28:59.7; Sidney Hendren, sophomore, finished 50th in 29:28.1.
Junior high results
Addison Kent from Duluth East won the boys’ junior high 2.6 kilometer race in 9:58.8.
North Shore Storm finishers and their placers are as follows: Chance Hasel, third;
Brayden Schmidt, seventh; Jonah Schmidt, ninth; Tristen Surbaugh, 16; Tighe McHugh, 17; Silas Brandt, 19; Reed Cruikshank, 24; and Gus Hahn finished in 24th place.
Jillian Sadjak of South Ridge won the junior high girls’ 2.6-kilometer race in 10:31.5.
The North Shore finishers and places were: Kylie Viren, 18 and Lizzy Dover, who placed 20th.
Junior varsity results
South Ridge sophomore Jimmy Zupanicich won the boys’ 4-kilometer race in 15:52.1. Riley Tarver was the lone North Shore Storm runner in the field, placing 41st.
Duluth East eighth-grader Amelia Wise easily captured the junior high girls’ title with a time of 18:26.3 for the 4k race. Abby Stoddard was the lone runner in the Junior High 4k or the Storm. She placed 29th in the field.
