Junior Will Surbaugh placed 13th in the Milaca Mega meet to help lead the North Shore Storm boys’ team to a third-place finish in the Division 3A, 5K cross-country race.
All told 6,600 runners took part in the largest high school cross-country race in America. The meet was held at the Stones Throw golf course in Milaca, Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Not far behind Surbaugh was sophomore Isaac Swanson who placed 16th in 17:14.1. Junior Brenden Seipke placed 20th in 17:17.9 while Junior Noah Smith was a step behind in 22nd in 17:18.9.
J.C. Holman was the Vikings’ fifth runner, the last runner that is scored in team points. J.C. placed 93rd in 18:40.05. Henry DeArruda Wharton placed 132nd with a time of 19:43.9 and Leif Anderson was the Vikings’ seventh runner; Leif placed 149th place with a time of 20:40.9.
The North Shore Storm ended with 164 points to earn the third-place plaque. Perham won with 48 points.
Sophomore Geno Urbom of Greenway/ Nashwauk-Keewatin won the 3.1-mile Division 3A event in 15:48.
Girls
The North Shore Storm girls finished in 10th place with 267 points. Again, Perham came out on top, scoring 57 points to take the Division 3A girls’ crown.
Leading the Storm was sophomore Cedar Gordon who took 25th place in 21:04.2.
Lamar Gordon, an eighth-grade harrier, was the second Storm runner across the finish line in 21:46.7 to place 49th.
Claire LaVigne, a senior, placed 59th in 22:00.2.
Sophomore Malin Anderson was right behind Claire in 60th place with a time of 22:01.4.
Junior Kate Walsberg crossed the line in 22:19.5 to finish 74th and Louise Ramberg, a sophomore, was the final North Shore Storm varsity runner with a 94th place finish in 23:02.2.
Tierney Wolfgram, a sophomore from Math & Science Academy was the fastest girl finisher with a time of 17:06. 8 for the 5K race. Ava Hill from Mesabi East was the second-fastest finisher in 18:44.6.
Manley Maxwell, a senior from Edina, had the fastest time of the day, running the distance in 15:31.2
