Neither the boys’ nor girls’ cross country teams have lost a meet this year, and now each team can claim the title of 2020 Polar League Champions, which they earned on Thursday, October 1.

Girls’ Varsity

The North Shore Storm girls’ team had five runners place in the top 12 runners in a meet that also featured Esko, Moose Lake/Willow River, Carlton-Wrenshall and South Ridge.

After the results were tallied, the North Shore Storm had 33 points, South Ridge 44, Carlton- Wrenshall, 84; Moose Lake/ Willow River, 95 and Esko, 112.

Leading North Shore Storm was Cedar Gordon, who placed second to Addison Burkhardt of South Ridge. Addison ran the 5K in 21:04, with Cedar crossing the line at 21:29. Taking fourth was Autumn Smith at 21:46. Lamar Gordon placed fifth in 21:49, Louise Ramberg finished tenth in 22:29, and Marin Anderson placed 12th in 22:48.

Boys’ Varsity

The North Shore Storm boys ran away with the title, finishing with 26 points to Moose Lake/ Willow River’s 51, South Ridge’s 73, Carlton-Wrenshall’s 102 and Esko’s 181.

Cromwell’s Noah Foster took the boys’ crown, finishing first in 17:34, more than 20 seconds ahead of Maverick Koecher from Moose Lake/Willow River.

Boys’ Junior Varsity

Moose Lake-Willow River won the junior varsity boys competition, finishing with 30 points. Placing second was the North Shore Storm, with 46, and South Ridge, who had 55 points.

Tanner DeBoer placed second with a time of 20:40. Brayden Schmidt finished fifth at 21:09; Ben Obinger was 13th at 22:04; Nicholas Swartz was 14th at 22:04; Elijah Smith placed 21st at 22:43; Haddon Taylor finished 29th in 24:39, and Ryan Bilben was 33rd with a time of 27:26.

Girls’ Junior Varsity

Only two teams had enough athletes to fill two squads, and the North Shore Storm had no trouble defeating South Ridge 17 to 50.

Aurora Gervais of Cromwell won the race, but because Cromwell didn’t have a full team, her place didn’t count in the team scoring. That meant that Trinity Giddings (23:54), London Smith (24:27), and Hattie Crotteau (24:29) placed one two three for the North Shore Storm. Bryn Fitzgerald-Wells (26:06) and Isabel Schotenbauer (26:15) placed eighth and ninth, but they placed fifth and sixth as far a team scoring.

Other North Shore Storm finishers were Amery Oberg, 11th in 26:41; Rachel Dorr, 12th in 26:43; Cecelia Chmelik, 15th in 26:50; Kylie Viren 16th in 27:26; and Greta Roth, who placed 19th in 28:38.

Boys’ Junior High

The North Shore Storm couldn’t field a full team of runners in the team competition, but several individuals ran: Odin Hansen placed 13th, Ethan Carr 29th, and Reed Cruikshank placed 35th.

South Ridge scored a perfect 15, beating Esko, who had 78 and MSLWR, who had 84. Max Sampson of McGregor won the race in 6:01.

Girls’ Junior High

Emma Warner of McGregor won the race of undetermined length by clocking a 7:01 time. Representing the North Shore Storm was Sophia Sheehan, who placed seventh, and Shawanda Everson, who finished 25th.
