The North Shore Storm girls’ and boys’ teams just missed qualifying for the state cross-country meet at the Section 7A cross-country meet held at the Cloquet Country Club on Thursday, October 24.
The top two teams and top eight individuals not on advancing teams qualified for the Minnesota state cross-country meet, which will be held in Northfield at Saint Olaf College on November 2.
Girls
Pequot Lake, with 74 points and Mesabi East with 113, finished ahead of the Storm who, when their top five runners’ finishing places were added up, came to 139 points. There were 18 teams in the field.
Celia Chaney, an eighth-grader from Pequot Lakes, placed first in the 5000-meter race, crossing the finish line in 18 minutes, 32 seconds. Mesabi East senior Ava Hill, the defending section champion, placed second in 18:50.
Autumn Smith led North Shore finishers with a 15th place. Finishing in the chute with Autumn was teammate Cedar Gordon, 16th place. Both were timed at 20:18. Lamar Gordon placed 19th with a time of 20:33. Malin Anderson took 42nd, finishing in 21:46, and Trinity Giddings was the fifth Storm runner with a 47th place and time of 21:52.
The North Shore Storm’s sixth runner was Louise Ramberg, who placed 52nd in 22:05, and Anna Hay was the seventh Storm runner, placing 60th, completing the 3.1-mile distance in 22:22.
None of the Storm girls qualified individually for the state meet.
Boys
If the girls were close to qualifying as a team, the boys were closer, although they too, finished third at sections.
Greenway took the team title with 97 points. Ely placed second with 100, and the Storm took third with 115 points in the 22-team field.
Back on track after losing the last four races was defending state champion Geno Uhrbom of Greenway. The junior ran away from the competition and crossed the line in 15:36. Ninth grade Virginia, Minnesota star Cameron Stocke placed second with a time of 16:01.
Three Storm runners qualified individually for state. Isaac Swanson placed 5th in the race, finishing in 16:52. Brenden Seipke was the seventh finisher, running 16:57, and Noah Smith placed 10th in 17:04.
Nate Bilben placed 35th with a great time of 18:05, and the Storm’s fifth runner was Tate Crawford, also running his best time of the year, crossing the line in 18:27 to finish 58th place.
Ian Thorpe, a freshman, ran 18:35 to place 62nd, and Kevin Viren was the Storm’s seventh runner, placing 80th with a time of 19:20.
