As expected Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin sophomore Geno Uhrbom easily defended his Section 7A title and won the 5k race in 15:47.
The state-qualifying meet was held Thursday, October 25 at the Cloquet Country Club.
Meanwhile, the North Shore Storm boys’ top five runners, none of them seniors, took second place with 86 points. Greenway won with 69 points. All told there were 19 boys’ teams entered in the section meet.
Leading the Storm was sophomore Isaac Swanson who finished in fourth place with a time of 16:54.9 Junior Brenden Seipke was one-tenth of a second behind him in 16:55 to take fifth.
Placing eighth was another junior, Noah Smith, who crossed the line in 17 minutes. Will Surbaugh, also a junior, placed 16th in 17:18. The Vikings’ fifth runner was JC Holman, who finished in 55th place in 18:43.
The Vikings’ sixth and seventh runners were sophomore Kevin Viren, who placed 63 in 18:57 and Tate Crawford, also a sophomore, who finished 76th in 19:14.
The North Shore Storm is made up of runners from Cook County and Two Harbors high schools.
While Uhrbom is the top ranked runner in Class A, Virginia’s Cameron Stocke let him know that he is an upcoming runner to be contended with by clocking 16:04. The eighth-grade runner is currently ranked sixth at state in the Class A division, and will only get better as he gets older and more mature.
Meanwhile the North Shore Storm boys are improving each week. They run on Saturday, November 3 at Northfield.
Girls’ results
Ava Hill, Mesabi East High School, won the girls’ individual crown with a 5k time of 18:54. She also led her team to a narrow victory over the North Shore Storm. Mesabi East finished with 98 points while the Storm finished in second place with 111 points. There was a field of 17 teams entered in the race.
Cedar Gordon, a sophomore, finished in 10th place with a time of 20:20. Eighth-grade sister Lamar Gordon placed 14th in 20:26. Autumn Smith, a ninth-grader, placed 20th in 21:05. Claire LaVigne, a senior, finished in 29th place in 21:32.
Junior Kate Walsberg was the Storm’s fifth runner, placing 38th in 21:47.
The Vikings’ sixth and seventh runners were close behind Walsberg. Malin Anderson, a sophomore, placed 41st in 21:54 while Louise Ramberg, also a sophomore, placed 43 in 22 minutes.
The state cross-country meet will be held on Saturday, November 3 at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. April Wahlstrom coaches both the boys and girls. This is the second year in a row that both the boys’ and girls’ teams have made it to the state cross-country meet.
