North Shore Scenic Drive to be highlighted

The Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC), with cooperation from the North Shore Scenic Drive Council (Council), will develop an interactive Story Map photo/video tour for the promotion, development, and increased public outreach of the North Shore Scenic Drive (Highway 61).

Highway 61 begins in Duluth and extends 154 miles northeast along the Lake Superior shoreline to Grand Portage. The tour will showcase the Drive, its waysides, and other amenities such as state parks, cities, and towns as well as points of interest and activities.

Story Maps combine online (web-based) interactive maps with text, photos, video, and audio. This interactive map will include a dynamic map of the entire byway and its surrounding communities, point-of-view GPS video with elevation profiles, standard and 360-degree photographs of local and scenic points of interest, links to public information and more. The Council will continually update the application as needed.

This recently completed project was funded in part by a grant from Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, with funding from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Here is a link to the map, which covers waysides from Duluth to Grand Portage, which is found at: arrowhead.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=d4197e107d244499b-33fb78ecb836065
