There was some tremendous log rolling that took place at the 2019 amateur world log rolling championships held August 1-3 in Hayward, Wisconsin, and much of it was done by a small contingency of kids from Cook County.
Hayward, Wisconsin was once again the site of the timber sports world championship, where pros and amateurs come together and perform for prizes and in the case of the pros, for money.
Showing great agility, cat-like balance, fast feet and prodigious endurance, Garrett Plummer took first place in the co-ed U7 category.
Alexis Plummer, Garrett’s older sister, nearly won a title of her own, taking second place in the always tough and very competitive girls’ U10 division.
After suffering a rare defeat in a recent log rolling competition, Alessandra (Ali) Duclos came on strong to win an exciting match over Libby Magnone in the girls’ U13 field to take her third world amateur world championship.
Taylor Everson tied for seventh place in the deep and always-tough girls’ U13 field.
In his first tournament of the year, Dominic Wilson, showing some rust in early matches, placed fourth in the U17 boys’ division.
Paige Everson capped a great amateur and semi-pro woman career with a second-place finish in the semi-pro women’s field. After her matches, Paige announced that she would now roll as a professional.
Bear Atkinson, Stillwater, Minnesota and Clearwater Lake, took 4th in the boys’ U10 field. His mother, Jenny Atkinson, a multiple boom running and log rolling professional world champion, brought the sport to Cook County and started the North Shore Rollers program. Jenny, now closer to 50 than age 40, placed 13th in the women’s logrolling professional division.
The tournament is held yearly in the Lumberjack Bowl, which was built around an inlet—more like a large pond—of the Namekagon River in Hayward.
If you are a fan of timber sports, sawing, chopping, boom running, log rolling, pole climbing, ax throwing etc. this is the place to go. And if you get there at the start of the tournament, you will no doubt get to see some great young athletes from Cook County showing off their skills as they compete against the top amateurs from the U.S. and some entrants from Canada.
