North Shore Rollers perform well at Worlds

Five Cook County Community YMCA North Shore Rollers competed at the Hayward Lumberjack World Championships amateur log rolling event on July 23-24 and all performed well in the heat against stiff competition. Both amateurs and professionals competed in Lumberjack events where the best choppers, axe throwers, chainsaw speed cutters, and pole climbers competed for prize money and the chance to be named the best in their events.

Arguably the top North Shore Rollers performer was 7-year-old Alexis “Lexi” Plummer. The daughter of Dave and Amanda Plummer won half a dozen matches and won the right to roll for third place. Lexi’s last match was against a little boy who just beat her out for third place in the U-7 division. Not one to hang her head, Lexi ended her match with a smile. Last year Lexi finished 17th in this division, so one can see how her hard work in practice has led to so much improvement.

Taylor Everson received a bye and then won four of five matches to get into contention for a medal. Taylor fell just a little bit short of the podium, placing fifth overall in a deep field of U-10 girls. All in all Taylor rolled really well and represented her club at a high level.

Paige Everson and Robin Henrikson both advanced to the second day, with Paige finishing fifth and Robin placing seventh in the U-13 girls bracket. Both girls fought hard and won several matches, but the competition gets tougher every year, and it’s getting harder and harder to medal at Worlds as these girls—both highly accomplished log rollers—would attest to.

Once again Wellesley Howard Larsen met Lily Duffy of Hayward in the medal rounds of the U-17 girls’ semi-pro division, and once again Wellesley led two falls to one only to have Lily come back and win the next two falls and the match. Both girls fought hard in an exciting match. Because they are semi-pros, competitors wear spiked shoes and roll on logs that aren’t carpeted like the amateurs do. Wellesley ended up just off the podium in fourth while Lily ended up in third place.

All in all it was an exciting competition and left Cook County North Shore Rollers itching to come back next year to see if they can improve upon their places.
