Several of the local log rolling team, the North Shore Rollers, competed in the November National Log Rolling Tournament in Hudson, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 13. Local competitors were Lucy Shaw, Emily Jacobsen, Dakota Marshall, and Jessica Berg-Collman. The girls rolled awesome despite not being able to practice at their “home pool”—the Grand Marais Municipal Pool—since the roof blew off the pool in the recent storm.

The 41-participant tournament was run as a “round robin,” meaning all competitors roll against each other for a full match, (three out of five falls) and the roller who has the highest amount of “falls” wins. Theroller who stays on the log receives the fall and wins that roll.

Jessica Berg-Collman lost a tough rematch with Lumberjack World Championship (LWC) contender, Ella Bateson of Madison, WI. Jessica beat Ella for the consolation match in July at the LWC. After the match, Jessica said with a smile, “She got her revenge from me beating her at LWC!”

Jessica placed second, while Ella placed first in this tournament.

Lucy Shaw rolled tough all day against some fierce competition. Lucy placed third in her division and rolled her way to the No. 3 log several times throughout the competition. Lucy also placed fourth in the speed birl, with a new personal record of 33 revolutions in 30 seconds.

Dakota Marshall and Emily Jacobsen also rolled competitively, with Dakota placing fourth and Emily fifth in their division. Theydid very well for being new competitors and their hard work and dedication is beginning to show as they both competed in three tournaments this year. They will be fun to watch next season, as the tournament exposure they received this year will certainly add to their ability and confidence.

The Lumberjack Log Rolling Super Series Awards were also given out during the awards ceremony. Jessica was honored with the Third Place Super Series plaque for the third highest number of points for all the tournaments combined throughout the season.

Congratulations to these girls for their outstanding performance at November Nationals!

Practices will resume when the Grand Marais swimming pool roof is repaired. Anyone interested is welcome to come and try log rolling.
