Four North Shore Rollers competed in the Three Rivers Roleo log rolling tournament held on the Black River in Onalaska, Wisconsin on a beautiful Saturday, July 11, and two came away with medals.
Overcast clouds kept the sun away for most of the day, which kept temperatures in the mid-70s, perfect for log rollers and spectators.
Taylor Everson rolled through a big group of U-10 girls to finish second while Dominic Wilson battled hard against some outstanding U-13 boys to finish in third place.
Both took home medals for their efforts.
Just outside of a medal was Wellesley Howard- Larsen, who finished fourth place in the U-17 girls’ division while Paige Everson placed seventh in the deepest, most competitive division of all, U-13 girls.
In the professional bracket Gretchen Greene of Madison, Wisconsin defeated Ellie Davenport of Hudson, Wisconsin in a match that lasted 14 minutes and 52 seconds.
Hayward’s J.R. Salzman didn’t lose a fall as he defeated Carl Rick to take the mens’ crown in a deep field filled against the best pros across the country. ESPN has called the Iraqi War vet one of the preeminent outdoor athletes of the last decade. In 2006 Salzman was badly injured while deployed in Baghdad. An Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) struck his vehicle and Salzman suffered a traumatic brain injury and lost his left arm. Although considered 100 percent disabled by the military, Salzman has gone on to win multiple log rolling world championships and is working to complete his master’s degree, truly an inspiration for all.
