The Cook County Community YMCA North Shore Rollers took a small contingent of log rollers to Hudson, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 8 and did well at the National Amateur Log Rolling tournament held at the Hudson YMCA.

In one of the highlight matches of the day, Taylor Everson battled Libby Magnone in a match that started on the 1 log (the biggest log) and went all the way to the 4 log. Until one competitor takes 3 falls out of five, rollers compete for 1 minute on the 1-log; 2 minutes on the 2-log; 3 minutes on the 3-log; and 4 minutes on the 4-log.

Each log is smaller than the one before and as logs decrease in size the action really picks up because the logs spin faster and faster. An exhausted Magnone won the exciting match 3 falls to 1 fall to take the championship, but Everson finished a strong second in a tough division.

Dominic Wilson rolled seven strong matches and competed like the champion he is in the U-13 boys division. Unfortunately, Wilson, the former U-10 Boys World Champion, is now competing against kids who are older, usually bigger, often faster, and stronger. However, he did give everyone he rolled against a hard run for his money. But while his great efforts earned him a lot of respect, he didn’t medal. Still, Wilson was involved in many exciting matches and he will soon be back on the medal stand.

Paige Everson rolled in the deepest field of the day. Like Wilson she is at the bottom of her age group and has to roll some girls who are a lot bigger and more experienced than she is. Still, Paige had a great day of logrolling and won a lot of falls and several matches.

Wellesley Howard- Larsen was fresh off of her second knee surgery (both knees had meniscus tears that needed to be cleaned out) and helped with the tournament, rolling sparingly. She finished third in the U-17 coed division but more importantly wrapped up the U-17 Super Series title, becoming the first North Shore Roller to earn this prestigious award. At age 14 Wellesley is both at the bottom (age wise) and top of her division.

To win a Super Series, competitors must enter and compete in at least five United States Logrolling Association (USLRA) tournaments. Points are awarded based on places in those tournaments and then tabulated at the end of the year and awards are given out at the Amateur National tournament in Hudson. Taylor Everson finished fourth in the Super Series, just missing out on a top three plaque.

Wellesley Howard-Larsen won the girls’ U-17 Super Series. She is the first North Shore roller to win a Super Series, which takes a roller’s top finish in 5 or more tournaments and adds them up.
