Onalaska, Wisconsin’s Great River Landing was the site of the 9th annual Three Rivers Roleo tournament, and several kids from the Cook County YMCA North Shore Rollers team competed in a regionally televised event that brought top professional and amateurs together on a beautiful Saturday, July 9.
Once again Ali Duclos had a good tournament, despite falling hard twice in a loss to a Lacrosse roller. Still, Ali recovered and battled back in the roundrobin competition and finished second in the U-10 girls division. Ali lost 3-0 in falls (out of 5 falls) in the championship match but she gave the champion Libby Magnone a strong run for her money.
Taylor Everson finished fourth in the girls’ U-10 division, losing 3-2 to Ali in the last round that determined medals.
Paige Everson placed fifth in the girls’ U-13 age group, which this year is loaded with talented rollers and might be the toughest group in either the boys’ or girls’ age brackets to compete in.
Wellesley Howard- Larsen made her professional debut and lost to former World Champion Shana Verstegen of Madison, Wisconsin and Lizzie Horvitz of Minneapolis, which was good tournament experience for her. Hudson, Wisconsin roller Ellie Davenport placed first in the 16 deep women’s professional field
Next up is the Namekagon River Roll Off in Hayward, Wisconsin on Sunday, July 17 and then the Lumberjack World Championships will be held in the same Hayward venue the following week. Several North Shore Rollers have a pretty good chance to finish in the top three at Worlds and take home a medal.
A highlight for the North Shore Rollers will be the Minnesota State Championships that will be held August 6 in Grand Marais during the Fisherman’s Picnic. This will be a chance for the kids to show off their fast feet and great skills in front of a home crowd. One added feature will be a separate professional women’s log rolling bracket.
Come out and cheer the kids on and watch as some of the finest women log rollers on the planet go head to head in a spirited competition.
