North Shore Health Named Top Critical Access Hospital

North Shore Health (NSH) was recently named one of the country’s top 20 critical access hospitals (CAHs) for patient satisfaction.

NSH scored best among CAHs as determined by the Chartis Center for Rural Health, based on data compiled in the Chartis Rural Health Performance INDEX™, specifically the patient satisfaction domain. The rankings were recently announced by the National Rural Health Association (NRHA). An awards ceremony will be held during NRHA’s Critical Access Hospital Conference in September in Kansas City, Mo.

The “Patient Perspective INDEX” uses the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Measures. All hospitals in the study are evaluated across all 10 HCAHPS domains. Each hospital’s performance across these ten metrics is aggregated and ranked against rural peers nationally. The Top 20 CAHs are recognized for the outstanding patient satisfaction they provide. This group was selected from the Chartis Center for Rural Health’s 2023 top 100 CAH list, released earlier this year.

The top 20 CAH best practice recipients have achieved success in one of two key areas of performance:

Patient perspective index: A hospital performance rating based on the percentile rank across all 10 HCAHPS domains.

Quality index: A hospital performance rating based on the percentile rank across the rural-relevant process of care measures.

“North Shore Health is proud of the efforts of all our employees and physicians whose work each and every day contributed to NSH achieving this designation,” says Kimber Wraalstad, NSH CEO. “The fact that our staff was recognized for this level of excellence during the COVID-19 pandemic is a testament to the outstanding team members here at NSH. Our results as one of the top 20 critical access hospitals in the country for patient satisfaction means our community knows that we take our Mission, “Community Access to Compassionate Care,” seriously as we deliver the services they need now and in the future.”
