North Shore Federal Credit Union Classic a success





 

 

The Cook County Tennis Association and North Shore Federal Credit Union held the first-ever North Shore Federal Credit Union Classic on 4th of July weekend, July 2-3.

In addition to two exciting days of competition, there was a fun parent/ child round-robin event offered on Saturday evening.

The tournament saw 20 players, totaling 36 entries, in the junior events and 35 players, totaling 42 entries, in the adult events. Everyone had a great time playing and watching tennis and enjoying the beautiful weather. The public courts were filled with matches for two solid days.

In the Boys’ 16 Singles quarterfinals, Collin Berglund (Lutsen) lost to Preston Wallin (Edina), 6-1, 7-5, while Lars Scannell, Wes Meyer, and Kurt Meyer received byes. In the semifinals, Lars Scannell (Grand Marais) defeated Kurt Meyer (Moorhead), 6-4, 6-2, and Preston Wallin defeated Wes Meyer (Moorhead), 6-4, 6-1. Lars Scannell won the championship, defeating Preston Wallin, 6-2, 6-3. Kurt Meyer won the Consolation championship, defeating Wes Meyer, 8-1.

In the Boys’ 14 Singles quarterfinals, Sahil Chhugani (Rochester) defeated Jamie Wick (Grand Marais), 6-3, 6-1, while Daniel Ahrendt, Sam Sajdak, and Pete Summers received byes. In the semifinals, Sahil Chhugani defeated Daniel Ahrendt (Grand Marais), 6-4, 6-4, and Pete Summers (Grand Marais) defeated Sam Sajdak (Pella, IA), 6-0, 6-0. Sahil Chhugani won the championship, defeating Pete Summers, 6-1, 6-3. Daniel Ahrendt won the Consolation championship, defeating Sam Sajdak, 8-3.

In the Boys’ 16 Doubles 3-team round-robin play, Daniel Ahrendt and Lars Scannell placed first by defeating Wes and Kurt Meyer, 6-2, 7-6 (5), and Pete Summers and Sahil Chhugani, 6-2, 7-5. Wes and Kurt Meyer defeated Pete Summers and Sahil Chhugani, 6-1, 6-2.

In the Girls’ 16 Singles championship, Caroline Skinner (Duluth) defeated Shelby Ahrendt (Grand Marais), 6-1, 6-4.

In the Girls’ 14 Singles three-person round-robin competition, Libby Zafft (Grand Marais) placed first by defeating Erica Lee (Roseville), 6-2, 6-0, and Sylvia Wallin (Minneapolis), 6-2, 6-0. Sylvia Wallin defeated Erica Lee, 6-0, 6-4.

In the Girls’ 12 Singles quarterfinals, Sarah Voelkers (Minneapolis) defeated Clarissa Wallin (Edina), 6-0,6-1, while Annika Iverson, Britta Iverson and Isabel Thiner received byes. In the semifinals, Annika Iverson (Mendota Heights) defeated Sarah Voelkers, 6-2, 6-3, and Britta Iverson (Mendota Heights) defeated Isabel Thiner (Fargo, ND), 6-3, 6-0. Annika Iverson won the championship, defeating Britta Iverson, 6-0, 6-3. Isabel Thiner won the Consolation championship, defeating Clarissa Wallin, 8-4.

In the Girls’ 12 Doubles championship, Annika Iverson and Sarah Voelkers defeated Britta Iverson and Isabel Thiner, 6-2, 6-0.

In the Men’s Open Singles quarterfinals, David Bergstrom (Grand Marais) defeated Michael Lindaman (Staples), 6-4 ,6-0, Paul Bates (St. Cloud) defeated Lee Shuman (Roseville), 6-2, 6-1, Tyler Bates (St. Cloud) defeated Mark Summers (Grand Marais), 4-4, withdrawal-injury, and John Wight (Edina) defeated Riley Bates (St. Cloud), 6-2, 6-3. In the semifinals, David Bergstrom defeated Paul Bates, 7-6 (6), 6-2, and John Wight defeated Tyler Bates, 6-3, 6-2. John Wight won the championship, defeating David Bergstrom in a match tie-break, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5). Riley Bates won the Consolation championship, defeating Michael Lindaman, 8-2.

In the Men’s 4.0 Singles quarterfinals, David Smith (Grand Marais) defeated Tyler Sajdak (Pella, IA), 6-1, 6-1 and Lars Scannell (Grand Marais) defeated Jeff Sajdak (Pella, IA), 6-2, 6-0. In the semifinals, David Smith defeated Tim Scannell (Grand Marais), 6-4, 7-6 (5), and Lars Scannell defeated John Muus (Grand Marais) in a match tie-break, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (9). Lars Scannell won the championship, defeating David Smith, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Tim Scannell won the Consolation championship, defeating John Muus, 8-3.

In the Men’s Open Doubles semifinals, Riley Bates and Tyler Bates advanced over Mark Summers and John Muus because of an injury withdrawal and Malcolm Macaulay (Duluth) and Rick Picard (White Rock, NM) defeated Scott Bergstrom and David Bergstrom (Grand Marais), 7-5, 6-3. Riley and Tyler Bates won the championship, defeating Malcolm Macaulay and Rick Picard, 6-1, 6-2.

In the Women’s Open Singles quarterfinals, Libby Zafft (Grand Marais) advanced over Charlotte Skinner (Duluth) because of an illness withdrawal, Audrey Park- Skinner (Duluth) defeated Kathy Bolstad (Grand Marais) in a match tie-break, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8), and Mikinzee Salo and Shelby Ahrendt received byes. In the semifinals, Mikinzee Salo (Pillager) defeated Libby Zafft, 6-0, 6-0 and Audrey Park-Skinner defeated Shelby Ahrendt (Grand Marais), 6-3, 7-5. Mikinzee Salo won the championship, defeating Audrey Park-Skinner, 6-0, 6-0.

In the Women’s Open Doubles championship, Lee Bergstrom (Grand Marais) and Kathy Bolstad defeated Shelby Ahrendt and Lynn Swanson (Grand Marais), 6-3, 7-5.

In the Mixed Open Doubles three-team roundrobin competition, David Bergstrom (Grand Marais) and Caroline Skinner (Duluth) placed first by defeating Daniel and Shelby Ahrendt (Grand Marais), 6-0, 6-1 and Kathy Bolstad (Grand Marais) and Carl Johnson (Green Valley, AZ), 6-2, 6-2. Kathy Bolstad and Carl Johnson defeated Daniel and Shelby Ahrendt, 6-0, 4-4 Ret (inj).

In the NTRP Combined Men’s 7.0 Doubles championship, Tyler Sajdak and Jeff Sajdak (Pella, IA) defeated Rod Wannebo (Grand Marais) and George Oullis (Grand Marais), 6-3, 6-3.
