North Shore destinations, restaurants and shops, including a number in Cook County, earned high praise from readers of Lake Superior Magazine’s 2016 “Best of the Lake” annual survey.
Results of a survey of visitors and locals around all four shores of Lake Superior were published in the August/September issue of the magazine. The magazine asked for reader choices in 12 categories, with winners chosen for each Lake Superior state and province: Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ontario.
“We love when readers share their ‘Best of the Lake’ choices, some of which surprise even us,” said Lake Superior Magazine Editor Konnie LeMay. “Perhaps the most amusing responses this year came when we asked folks to reveal their special Rock/Agate Picking locale. While many essentially wrote, ‘You’re kidding, right?’ many others did generously suggest their favorite spots.”
North Shore winners on the list include the Angry Trout Café, Grand Marais, as best restaurant/café; Lutsen Resort was second to Cove Point Lodge, Beaver Bay as best resort/motel; Beaver Bay took second place as the best rock/agate picking location; Grand Marais took second place as the best place to watch a sunrise/ sunset; Grand Marais won second place as the best shopping experience (Joynes Ben Franklin, Lake Superior Trading Post and Sivertson Gallery); Bluefin Bay, Tofte was the second place winner as the best romantic getaway; Grand Marais’s Fisherman’s Picnic was voted second-best festival; the Gunflint Trail came in second as the best place for bird and wildlife watching; Naniboujou Lodge was second place winner as best supper club; Grand Marais was voted as the top place to view the northern lights; and Lutsen was named the best winter destination.
Winners of the “Best of the Lake” receive clings and certificates that announce the honor for display on and can often be found on windows or walls. Now in its 37th year, Lake Superior Magazine is a family-owned publication based in Duluth.
