The North Shore combined cross country team(s) of Cook County, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors had a fantastic meet at Hibbing on Thursday, September 29, with many personal records (PRs) set by both girls and boys from seventh through 12th grade.
Girls Varsity
Personal records (PRs) and seasonal bests (SB) times were the themes for the North Shore girls cross country team that competed in the Hibbing Invitational cross country meet that featured 28 large and small school teams.
The meet was on Thursday, September 29, and North Shores top six runners had PRs.
Olya Wright led the way with a fifth-place finish in the girls 5K varsity race. Olya broke 20 minutes for the first time, finishing in 19:48.
Lamar Gordon placed tenth in the deep field of runners. Lamar crossed the line in 20:19.6; Jocelyn Carr placed 27th in 21:10.4; Sierra Geatz finished 34th in 21:19.9; Lexi Surbaugh was 46th with a time of 21:52.1; Quincy Hurth placed 47th in 21:52.6 and London Smith was 48th in a seasonal best time of 21:52.8.
Hibbing won the girls race with a total of 68 points. Rock Ridge was second with 107 and North Shore was third with 113 points. Mia Hoffman from Bemidji ran 18:58.1 to win the race.
Girls Junior Varsity
The top six runners on the girls Junior Varsity Team had PRs, and their new records helped them to place second in the team competition. Brianna Monson led with a fifth place, crossing the finish line in 22:26.7. Emma Crook placed 11th in 23:20.9; Claire Lindstrom was 14th in 23:43.6; Genevieve Silence placed 22nd in 24:37.7, and Signe Myers placed 38th in 26:44.9. Shawanda Edwards ran a seasonal best of 30:10.8 and placed 59th in a deep field of runners.
Girls Junior High
Showing signs that the future looks bright for the cross country program, the junior high girls team took third place out of seven teams.
The girls places and finish times for 3,000 meters are Grace Swartz, 7th, 13:30; Ryleigh Thorpe, 8th, 13:36.4; Liz Swartz, 28th, 15:04.7; Amelia Saamanen, 32nc, 15:21.6; Leah Belmore, 38th, 15:43; Sophia Lindstrom, 43rd, 15:54.5; Zoey Kacures, 44th, 15:55; Aili Gischia, 50th, 16:15.4; Maya Rodriguez, 56th, 17:19.8; Anni Dix, 57th, 17:19.9; Hazel Loechty, 64th, 18:29.9 and Patience Sifferath, 65th, 18:30.
Boys Varsity
Ian Thorpe ran a PR time of 16:43.3 to place fifth and lead North Shore to a sixth place finish in a strong field. Noah Foster of Cromwell won the boy’s race with a time of 16:05.
Also setting PRs were Cyrus Myers, who placed 30th in 18:13.1; Elijah Smith, 40th, in 18:30.6; and Nick Swartz, 53rd in 18:49.6; Tristan Surbaugh placed 56th in 18:51.5 but didn’t get a new PR. Brayden Schmidt was 62nd with a PR of 19:03.4, and Clay Thorpe finished in 64th place with a seasonal best of 19:04.6.
Boys Junior Varsity
Although he didn’t PR, Keean Selin’s 13th place in the Boys JV race led his team to a fifth-place team finish. Keean ran the 5K in 19:44.7. Adam Oberg ran 19:49.3 to place 15th; Chance Jacobsen placed 24th in 20:24.1; Grant Oberg finished 36th in a PR of 20:58.5; Andrew Hallberg also set a PR with his time of 21:34.5 while placing 46th. Haddon Taylor, 58th, 22:11.2; Rylan Brown, 59th, 22:15d and Odin Hansen, 62nd, 22:35.5, all set PRs on the day.
Alex Stone placed 79th in 23:43.3, and Robert Rodriguez ran a PR time of 24:11 and placed 88th.
Boys Junior High
Georgi Dimitrova finished in 7th place to lead the boys junior high team to a second-place finish. Georgi ran the 3000 meters in 11:50.8. The next finishers for North Shore were Ethan Fish, 14th in 12:05.2; Talon DeBoer, 22nd in 12:45.1; Erik Gischia, 53rd in 13:32.8; Dylan O’Brien, 81st in 15:01.1; Lucas Hackett, 90th in 16:23.3; Lute Jansen, 97th in 17:09; Logan Smith, 98th in 17:53.5 and Reed Cruikshank, 106th in 23:07.4.
