The North Shore Challenge was run September 2 on the Pincushion Mountain Trails on a nice day for running. Mighty Duluth East was back again this year with more than 100 total runners on their boys’ and girls’ cross country team, and both the Duluth East Greyhound boys’ and girls’ teams won first place in the varsity competition.
Boys Varsity 5K
Duluth East’s Oliver Miatke took first place in the boys’ competition with a time of 17:12. Nate Bilben was the top North Shore Storm finisher with a 6th place and time of 18:13.
Other North Shore Storm finishers were Ian Thorpe, 16th; Clay Thorpe, 25th; Kyler Hansen, 32nd; Elijah Smith, 33rd; Cyrus Myers, 42nd; Keean Selin, 43rd; Nicholas Swartz placed 57th; Brayden Schmidt, 59th; Jonah Schmidt, 74th; AJ Mattson, 75th; Haddon Taylor, 77th; and Ben Obinger, placed 81st.
Duluth East’s top five runners places tallied 37 points. Placing second was Proctor (65), Greenway/ N-K (73), North Shore Storm (90). Moose Lake/ Willow River/ Barnum (108) and South Ridge (135).
Girls Varsity 5K
Duluth East’s Cora Nephew placed first in the girls’ 5k, crossing the finish line in 20:24. Duluth East took five of the first 13 places to win the team competition.
The North Shore girls’ team ran as a pack, placing four girls in the 11 spots. Olya Wright led the team with an eighth-place finish. Olya ran 21:19, placing just ahead of teammates Lamar Gordon, ninth; Autumn Smith, tenth; and Anna Hay, 11th. Jocelyn Carr was the team’s fifth finisher. Jocelyn placed 27th to round out the team’s scoring.
Other North Shore Storm finishers were Trinity Giddings, 28th; Amery Oberg, 50th; CeCe Chmelik, 68th.
The top teams in order were Duluth East Greyhounds (29), North Shore Storm (60), Proctor (64), South Ridge (122), Carlton/Wrenshall (134), Moose Lake/WR/Barnum (144), Greenway/N-K (147).
Junior High boys
The North Shore Junior High Boys’ won the team competition with 90 points, finishing ahead of South Ridge (58), Proctor (66), and Duluth East (83).
Nathan Tangen of Proctor placed first in the Jr. High Boys 2.6-kilometer race with a time of 10:11. The North Shore Storm’s Finn Taylor placed third, Eddie Larson fourth, Grant Oberg seventh, Adam Oberg eighth, Odin Hansen 11th, Rylan Brown 14th, Elia Pszwaro 15th, Ethan Fish, 17th, Sidney Litterst, 22nd; Talon DeBoer, 23rd; Erik Gischia, 28; Eero Moody, 33rd; and Lute Jansen 34th.
Junior High girls
Duluth East won the Junior High Girls’ competition, edging the North Shore Storm 46 to 50. South Ridge (69), Proctor (88), and Carlton/Wrenshall (99) were the other teams in the field.
Zoey Burkhardt of South Ridge placed first in the Junior High Girls 2.6-kilometer race with a time of 11:24.9.
North Shore Storm finisher in order was London Smith, 3rd; Lexi Surbaugh, 4th; Sierra Geatz, 11th; Claire Lindstrom, 13th; Brianna Monson, 19th; Emma Crook, 20th; Sophia Lindstrom, 26th; MJ Wharton, 30th; MJ Wharton, 30th; Zoey Kacures, 32; Signe Myers, 38th; Celeste Everson, 40th; Amelia Saamanen, 43rd; Leah Belmore, 46th; Patience Sifferath, 53rd; and Anya Howard placed 54th.
Junior Varsity boys
Duluth East won the junior varsity race with 26 points, narrowly beating Greenway/Nashwauk Keewatin by three points. Proctor (94) and North Shore Storm (101) rounded out the team scoring.
Hayden Clow, Greenway/ Na shwauk Keewatin, placed first in the 4-kilometer race with a time of 15.11.
Andrew Hallberg led the North Shore Strom with a 17th place finish. Isaac Schmidt placed 21st, Edwin Erickson 25th, Robert Rodriguez 32nd, and Reed Cruikshank finished 40th.
Junior Varsity girls
Only two teams entered the Junior Varsity race, and Duluth East almost had a perfect score, winning 16 to 46 over Proctor. However, a perfect score is 15, which means your team placed first through fifth in the race.
Duluth East’s Taylor Wood placed first in the girls’ Junior Varsity 4-kilometer race with a time of 19:05.
Shawanda Everson led the North Shore Storm with an 18th place finish. Unfortunately, no other girl finished the race for the North shore Storm, so the ‘Storm didn’t have enough runners for a team score.
