North House Winterer’s Gathering and Arctic Film Fest

North House Folk School was a busy place this past weekend as folks gathered to take part in the Winterer’s Gathering and Arctic Film Fest.

Featured classes included snowshoe lacing, Mukluk repair and restoration, firewood preparation, and Fix your Holey Socks. There was also a sled dog meet and greet courtesy of Points Unknown Dogsledding and a display of winter camping gear from Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply.

North House Communications and Marketing Manager Joe Beres said, “Winterers’ Gathering may have looked a bit different this year, but it felt wonderful to welcome this annual event back to campus and celebrate the coming of the winter season. This year’s events were scaled appropriately for Covid, moving as much as we could outdoors, allowing for social distancing and requiring masks indoors, and ensuring ventilation in all of the buildings. The Snowshoe Shuffle Contra Dance and Cold Snap Poetry Slam were not in the cards this year, but we look forward to safely welcoming those important traditions back in the future. We also offered online presentations each week in November for friends near and far to enjoy from their home and participate in Winterers’ Gathering virtually. We welcomed hundreds to these talks from all over the region and all over the world—with participants from as far afield as Beijing!”
