Built With Love
Dig out those shovels, shake out those sweaters, and lace up those boots – winter is here on the North Shore! Celebrate its arrival at North House Folk School during Winterers’ Gathering over the weekend of November 17-20.
The featured speaker this year is Anton Treuer, professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University. Author of several books – including The Cultural Toolbox, a selection for the Cook County Community Read program – Treuer will share an Ojibwe Winter Stories presentation in the Red Building at 7pm on Saturday. North House is also pleased to partner with Cook County Higher Education and Grand Portage for related events, including Treuer’s presentations on environmental stewardship and an Indigenous perspective on healing our communities.
Exploring the crafts, history, landscape, and traditional practices of life in the North, an Arctic Film Festival kicks off on Friday at 10 a.m. and runs through Sunday afternoon. On Friday at 12 p.m. North House is pleased to host the producers of the short film Built with Love during its world premiere screening. After the film, the audience may connect with the filmmakers through a Q&A session, and a hardanger fiddle performance will also take place. Another film festival highlight includes the 10:30 a.m. screening on Saturday of a new Craft in America episode, “HOME,” featuring Hedstrom Lumber Company, North House Folk School, and local resident Susan Scherer.

“The Arctic Film Festival brings a special joy,” said North House Program Manager Sarah Beggs. “Through the films we see people from northern regions of the world interacting with their cold climates and remote landscapes, and this beautiful bonding thread emerges. Stories from northern Minnesota are included, bringing this connection right home for many of us watching.”
Seminars and skill shares are also scheduled throughout the weekend and range from winter weather forecasting, dark skies, polar life in Greenland, Anishinaabe fire traditions, a quilting bee, pack and gear mending, dutch oven cinnamon rolls, and much more! Admission to all programs and films is free to the public during the event.
Friday evening will feature an Artisan Development Program studio open house, open fire dinner on a stick and outdoor film screening, a contra dance led by Over the Waterfall, and the Cold Snap Poetry Slam.
Saturday is filled with wintry events, including the Great Gear and Ski Sale, sled dog puppy meet and greet, winter tent camp tour in the Rec Park, and an evening chili feed.
