Craft in America brought a film crew to North House Folk School last week to prepare for an upcoming episode for the Peabody Award winning series that airs on PBS.
Since 2007 there have been 25 shows produced, with episodes showing diverse regions and culture, blending history with the practice of making crafts, and exploring issues of identity, ritual, philosophy, and creative expressions.
While in the county the Craft in America crew worked in several locations. They focused on coursework on the North House campus, community images captured around town (and from the Pincushion overlook), Hedstrom Lumber, student projects on the Gunflint Trail, and they were going to try to make it to Chic-Wauk Museum & Nature Center to see a timbered boat building project, built at North House by Chic-Wauk volunteers.
On Wednesday afternoon, August 25, the film crew spent quite a bit of time with Gerald David, timber frame instructor, as he taught a class outdoors on campus. David is a timber frame contractor based in Duluth. The four Craft in America workers moved equipment, cameras, and the boom mike constantly as David moved about to show students how to cut, measure, and prepare the timbers for building.
While the production crew had to leave for another assignment, plans are for a return visit and more filming will take place.
The episode featuring North House will be aired as part of the Craft in America 2022 program season, either in summer or fall of the year.
When North House Folk School Director Greg Wright was asked how the school had been selected for the program he responded, “North House personnel met Carol Sauvion, creator/ director of Craft in America, in the early 2000s when a friend brought her up to see the school. Carol revisited North House as our Unplugged featured speaker in 2019, and during the visit she met many instructors, witnessed the warmth of Grand Marais, and sensed the investment of community members and the partnership between the school and the community. Afterwards, she noted “North House Folk School is a place of craft and creativity unlike any other.’ Shortly thereafter her vision for a show about Home and North House took shape.”
