North House Folk School gets IRRRB grant

North House Folk School was the recent recipient of a $20,000 Culture & Tourism grant from the Iron Range Resources Rehabilitation (IRRR) Board. The money will be used to help construct a new driveway entrance to help improve safety and accessibility to the campus.

“These funds will be invested in key campus improvements that align with the Highway 61 project being completed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT),” said North House Executive Director Greg Wright. “Central to the project is a new driveway that will also serve as a pedestrian-friendly walkway, which will be built in partnership with the Angry Trout along the shared property line. As the highway re-construction includes a new format for the 5th Ave W/ Hwy 61 intersection (closing the driveway located in between North House’s yellow house and Dockside), North House will also build a timbered stairway, add campus signage and create timbered benches and timbered tree boxes to make the campus’ entry even more welcoming.”

The award to North House was one of nine Culture & Tourism grants the IRRRB distributed during this funding cycle throughout Northeast Minnesota.

Wright noted, “Key projects at North House move forward thanks to partners like IRRRB. Their purposeful investment, as well as the involvement of the Mardag Foundation, means this project can move forward in late spring 2021.”

The IRRRB funds culture and tourism grants through taxes paid by the Minnesota mining industry.
