Saturday January 29 some snowflakes fell, and the temperatures hovered in the mid-20s, perfect weather for the Norpine Fat Bike Classic race.
Tim Kennedy, president of the Superior Cycling Association, lined the racers up, gave them instructions, and after the National Anthem, riders were off, many smiling as they pedaled through a thick flurry of snowflakes.
A change in the racecourse was made because the Norpine Trail Association’s Pisten Bully’s engine blew, and the machine wasn’t available to groom the course. That necessitated a move to Cascade Lodge, where the long and short course races started.
Some riders competed in the 20-mile-long course event. The race began at Cascade Lodge and riders followed the Hall/Massie trail loop and ended back at the lodge.
The 14-mile short course began at the lodge and racers rode one loop of the Hall/ Massie trail and finished back at the Cascade Lodge.
For those who didn’t want to race but wanted the thrill of riding the trail, there was a Norpine Fat Bike Classic Tour. This followed the 14-mile short course. There was also a six-mile trail ride held in the evening on Saturday that began at the lodge and ended at 8 p.m.
The Norpine fat tire bike races were put on by the Superior Cycling Association, with the proceeds directed to the Norpine Trail Association.
No race results were available.
