Norman Leroy Joynes, 94, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday June 16, 2015 at the Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin.
Norman was born May 17, 1921 at Frankfort, Michigan, the son of Thomas and Aleda (Lindberg) Joynes. He graduated from high school in Grand Marais and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Norman fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star.
Norman was married to Charlene Nelson on May 1, 1948 in Carlton County. He worked as a logger and at the Taconite Plant at Taconite Harbor in Cook County, before working as a heavy equipment operator for the Cook County Highway Department. After moving to southern Minnesota he worked for Lyle Public Schools and for Streater Industries in Albert Lea until his retirement in 1986.
Following his first wife’s death, Norman was married to Alta Myhre Farlinger on August 10, 1974 at Rochester, Minnesota.
Norman enjoyed waterskiing and was an avid reader. He liked to paint and “putter” around the house and yard.
Norman was preceded in death by his first wife Charlene, grandson Anthony (Tony) Coughlin, parents, three brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife Alta Joynes, Austin, Minnesota; daughter, Elizabeth Coughlin, Austin; granddaughter, Shelly Bergstrom, Austin; stepchildren, Darwin and Swanee Farlinger, Austin; David and Kathy Farlinger, LeRoy, Minnesota; Diane and Jeff Korte, Forest City, Iowa; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Willett, Grand Marais; sister-in-law Florence (Olaf) Goldberg and brother-in-law, Eugene (Audrey) Myhre.
A private family service will be held at the Six Mile Grove Cemetery, rural Lyle, Minnesota with the Reverend Ronald D. Myers officiating. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family prefers memorials and they can be directed to Alta Joynes.
