On January 20, the Two Harbors/ Cook County Nordic team traveled to the 12th Annual Marshall Sprints, Duluth, for fast-paced sprint racing. The sprint format uses multiple short races, typically one kilometer to qualify/ eliminate racers. This new format for the Nordic team tested their short-distance speed, in contrast to the 5-kilometer events the team has skied thus far which have tested their endurance.
The warm sunny day started with a 1.2-kilometer qualifying sprint race with the top 28 boys and top 28 girls moving on to the single elimination sprint heats. In his qualifying sprint, Junior Josh Prom powered his way into the elimination heat with a time of 3:42 minutes. In the second sprint race, Josh was up against six other top skiers and did not qualify to move on to the next sprint heat.
Junior Leif Anderson’s time of 3:52 in the qualifying sprint race did not qualify him to move to the next sprint, but instead he moved on to the 2.4-kilometer consolation race. Anderson’s time of 12:08 in the boys’ varsity consolation race earned him a 7th-place finish.
With a time of 4:26, sophomore Robin Hendrickson tied with two other skiers in a hard-fought girls’ varsity qualifying sprint race. Robin moved to the 2.4-kilometer girls’ varsity consolation and placed 15th with a time of 12:09 minutes.
Danny Berka finished the 2.4 kilometer junior high boys’ race in 20th place with a time of 10:44 minutes.
