It was a busy week for the North Shore Storm Nordic Ski Team. On Saturday, January 7th the team traveled to Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik, MN for the Mesabi East Invitational. This is the largest High School Nordic Ski race in the nation – 61 schools participated with 973 skiers competing.

Our team did quite well with some of our newest skiers giving the challenging hills of Giant’s Ridge a great effort. The North Shore Storm from Cook County took 8 skiers to compete. This meet skiers chose which technique they wanted to race: either a 5K classic or skate. Results were as follows:

On Tuesday, January 10th, the bus ride to Korkki Trails (between Duluth & Two Harbors) was humming as our skiers prepared for the Korkki Classic – a mix of serious skiing with a carnival type setting. Our team excels on the “keep it fun” scale. Kids donned our “retro/vintage” suits as well as wigs, hats and tutus. They also excelled at racing in challenging waxing conditions as the temperatures hovered around 32F with the threat of freezing rain. Skiers have been working on their double pole technique, and they used it a lot on these rolling trails. We had two skiers that skied their first Nordic ski race: Elizabeth Larson & Aidan Selin!
