Because Cook County High School has a small group of young cross country skiers this year, no one competed at the varsity level at the Ely High School cross country ski meet at Hidden Valley Ski Area on January 29.
With that said, Robin Henrikson had a fine day, placing 16th in the girls’ junior high 4.7 kilometer (K) freestyle classic pursuit in a time of 21:16.
In the 3.3 K junior high race, Elsa Gary placed 50th in 17:39. Hattie Kunzie followed her in 52nd in 17:47, and Daphne Lacina placed 54th in 18:38.
Trent Spry placed 38th in the 3.3 K boys’ pursuit freestyle with a time of 15:34 and in 39th place was teammate Sterling Pollock finishing with a time of 15:56.
On January 12, the team traveled to the Cloquet- Esko- Carlton Freestyle Invite. Linnea Henrikson placed 32nd in 28:02 in the 5.5 K girls’ junior high race with Lucy Callender not far behind in 45th in 34:04.
In the girls’ junior high 2.5 K race Daphne Lacina finished 51st in 15:53, Hattie Kunzie was 53rd in 16:11, Elsa Gary was 59th in 16:51, and Ella Hedstrom was 62nd. in 18:42
In the junior high boys’ 2.5 kilometer race, Sterling Pollock placed 31st in 13:59; Kestrel Pollock placed 35th in 14:37; and Trent Spry placed 37th in 15:04.
Because Cook County Schools – I.S.D. 166 doesn’t pay for the program, the North Shore Ski and Run Club sponsors the high school team which is coached by CCHS math teacher Tim Dennison.
The Section 7 state-qualifying meet was held Thursday, Feb. 4 at Giants Ridge Ski Resort in Biwabik.
The state cross country ski meet will be held at press time on February 11 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. Once again Ely and Duluth East will be the favorites to send teams and individuals to the meet.
