Cook County delegates endorsed Rick Nolan for Congress at the 8th Congressional District Democratic- Farmer-Labor (DFL) Convention May 5-6 in Duluth.
Nolan won on the first ballot, receiving over 75% of the votes of the 180 delegates present. Nolan will campaign for the Congressional seat formerly held by Rep. Jim Oberstar and currently held by Rep. Chip Cravaack.
The convention also voted to send Denny FitzPatrick of Grand Marais as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention this fall in Charlotte, North Carolina to nominate President Barack Obama for a second term. An excited FitzPatrick told the Cook County News- Herald, “I feel like Forest Gump, just in the right place at the right time to be selected. I’m so revved about being a delegate to the National Convention!”
Tina Krauz was elected to the 8th Congressional District Platform Commission.
Bill Hansen and Mary Ann Atwood co-chaired the Cook County delegation. The other elected delegates and alternates are Abby Tofte, Jerry Hiniker, Larry Caven, Tina Krauz, Pat Campanaro, Stan Tull, Frank Dvorak, Barb Dvorak, Anton Moody, and Denny FitzPatrick.
Bill Hansen spoke to the convention floor in support of ranked choice voting, sometimes known as instant runoff voting. Cook County DFLer and former legislator Frank Moe spoke in support of Minnesotans United for All Families.
Senator Tom Bakk and Representative David Dill received endorsement at the State Senate District 3A Convention, also held May 5 in Duluth. The delegates elected Cook County DFL Chair Diane Parker to serve as vice chair of the district.
