A hundred years ago, it was “unthinkable” that two people of different races would be allowed to marry. Today, we call people who oppose such marriages racist. And today, we have another question of marriage upon us: should two people of the same sex be prevented from marrying?
In her October 6 letter to the editor, Mrs. Westerlind calls these people “unnatural,” but is she aware that homosexuality is actually rather common in nature? Over 1500 species have been documented participating in homosexual behavior, including our closest genetic cousins, primates.
Perhaps dolphins, bonobos, bison, and sheep are unnatural as well?
Please remember that the marriage amendment is nothing except legalized bigotry. It will only make it harder for loving and committed couples to receive the legal status they deserve. Let’s all be respectful, civil, and vote “no.”
