A two-vehicle accident—a mini-van and a logging truck—occurred when a minivan driver braked to avoid hitting deer near Cutface Creek on Highway 61 at approximately 5:30 p.m. on January 3. A logging truck rear-ended the mini-van, but fortunately there were no injuries.
Peter Sorenson, 46, of Richfield, Minnesota was driving a 2007 Dodge Caravan when he rounded the corner to find deer standing in the driver’s lane. Sorenson slowed down to avoid the deer and the logging truck, driven by Charles VanDoren, 51, of Schroeder was unable to slow down in time. The fully loaded 2000 International truck hit the back of the mini-van.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a “heavy dusting” of snow on the road contributed to the accident. Minnesota State Patrol Trooper Aaron Schmidt said slippery roads were a factor. No citations were issued.
All parties were wearing seatbelts and there were no injuries. The mini-van had extensive damage to the rear, but Sorenson was still able to drive it. The semi received minor damage.
