At 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, Cook County Law Enforcement received a call reporting a chimney fire on Skou Road in Schroeder, with flames visible.
The Schroeder and Tofte Fire Departments and Rescue Squad, as well as Cook County Ambulance were paged at 11:23 p.m. The Schroeder Fire Department arrived to the residence at 11:38 p.m. to find that the fire had been extinguished.
The homeowner, John Allen, told the fire department that he had sprayed water in the top and bottom of the chimney. Firefighters inspected and found no flames and no smoke visible from the eaves. There was no apparent damage to the home.
Other emergency responders were cancelled. The Schroeder Fire Department was clear by 12:29 a.m.
According to www.TheChimneyDoctor.com, chimneys are well insulated and it is unlikely that a chimney fire will spread to the rest of the house. However, in rare instances, a chimney fire can catch on explosively, shooting flames and dense smoke out the top or can be slow-burning and barely noticeable until it is hot enough to damage the chimney and catch the house on fire, so it is always a good idea to contact the local fire department in the event of a chimney fire.
The Chimney Doctor also advises that homeowners have chimneys inspected and cleaned regularly.
