At 11:23 a.m. on January 16, Cook County Law Enforcement received a 9-1-1 call from an employee at My Sister’s Place restaurant in Grand Marais reporting a fire in the kitchen.
Sheriff Deputies arrived to find flames on and around the grill at 11:46 a.m. and a restaurant worker informed them a fire extinguisher had been used. Deputies shut off the gas at the outside of the building.
Restaurant owner Paul Sporn arrived shortly after and used a fire extinguisher specifically for grease fires. Reached a few days after the incident, Sporn said it was a small grease fire that he was able to put out “within 30 seconds.”
The fire was extinguished quickly enough that the restaurant’s ancillary fire protection did not go off.
Grand Marais Fire Chief Ben Silence said that the fire was out before the fire department arrived. The fire department used its large ventilation fans to clear out the smoke and was clear of the scene by 11:57 a.m. Although the fire was not serious, Silence said he was pleased with the Grand Marais Fire Department’s response. “We had a great turnout,” he said.
Sporn said My Sister’s Place was closed for a few hours for cleanup but reopened the same day.
