No criminal suspicions in tragic death of Duluth teen

A troubled 14-year-old male from Duluth was found unconscious and not breathing in his family’s van near the Grand Portage Powwow Grounds at 7:32 p.m. on Sunday, August 12. Grand Portage Ambulance transported the boy to Cook County North Shore Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cook County Law Enforcement documents state that the youth apparently hung himself with a seatbelt in the van, as his family was packing to leave after Grand Portage Rendezvous Days. Family members said the boy had a developmental disability and had threatened suicide in this manner in the past.

Cook County Sheriff Deputies investigated and found no suspicion of criminal activities.

Funeral services were held in Duluth on Saturday, August 18. His family said their son and brother “loved electronics, especially video games and helping people. He was a very hard worker and he loved his family.”
