Night skies no longer pristine

Being the insomniac that I am, sometimes my dog Oscar and I go outside late at night. A lot of people come here to live in a pristine environment. Leave the city, move to the country.

I love all of the big spruce and red pine trees on our property, but the backdrop at night is: Although it’s supposed to be dark, the lights from town, the big red lights from the radio tower, and the search light from the airport flashing remind me that the idea of living in a pristine environment vanished a long time ago. Sorry, Dorothy, this isn’t Kansas, but it ain’t Oz either. Go figure.

I forgot that a couple of years ago the electric company erected the Towers of Orthanc directly across from my house, and when it’s humid or raining, the darn thing hums and buzzes at about 80 db. And of course, looking down my driveway, a big power pole and wires. You think they could move at least the pole over a couple feet so I didn’t have to look at it.
