New Year’s resolutions for 2019

Here’s hoping you have a great 2019. The optimist in me says 2019 will be celebrated in many ways, but of course, every year brings some laughter and some tears.

Will cancer be cured this coming year? How about Alzheimer’s? Polio? Will there be answers for a host of other maladies and health concerns that trouble us?

The answer is that probably none of these things are going to go the way of the passenger pigeon, but medical advances are steady, and even if they seem screamingly slow, the inch by inch progress researchers are making will lead to better outcomes for us—or someone else—in the future.

Are we going to travel to Mars and terraform it? That seems to be the agenda of some, but I say let’s clean up our planet before we mess up another rock. That’s not to say I’m against exploring space. It’s vast, almost timeless, stunning, and all too interesting to ignore. So search and search and search some more.

Worldwide there is still far too much hunger, too many people die in poverty, too many don’t have decent housing or safe water to drink. No, I’m not talking about Flint, Michigan, but then again, maybe I am.

My resolutions for 2019 are to volunteer more, exercise more, take better care of myself so I can take better care of those closest to me, and care for my planet. You see, you might say it’s not my planet, but if we all take ownership of it, then we will take better care of it. For now, it’s the only rock we have to live on.

I hope you achieve at least some of the resolutions you have made. No matter what, thinking positively will be a significant step forward, even at times when it seems everything is going backward.

And hopefully, 2019 will bring you far more laughter and joy than tears.
