New year brings new opportunities to Grand Marais Playhouse

The Grand Marais Playhouse begins each new year with excitement as we imagine what is possible. The stage is dark. Empty! The possibilities are endless. What stories will be told? Who will join us in the creation of new adventures? What friendships will begin? What relationships will deepen for community members who share the enchantment of bringing a play to life? All are welcome. The possibilities are endless. How exciting! Happy New Year!

The Grand Marais Playhouse is currently working on multiple adventures. The annual kids’ play, the return of Emily Johnson Dance Company, planning a one-act play to take to the Minnesota Association of Community Theater’s One Act Festival in March, possible dinner theater opportunities, classes in acting with Jackson Nickolay and Rose Arrowsmith DeCoux, and of course our summer theater festival and a return visit of Monroe Crossing in September.

Planning needs to begin early for the summer theater festival so an interest meeting is set for January 22 at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in participating in a musical or a comedy this summer should come for more information. The commitment will involve rehearsals beginning in a relaxed manner this winter and continue through spring. The plays will hit the stage in early July with performances weekends (Thursday – Sunday) July 16 – August 9, alternating between comedy and musical each night.

Emily Johnson is bringing back her award-winning Catalyst dance troupe to perform Niicugni—the second installment of her trilogy that includes dance, stories, live music and touches on the history of Johnson’s Alaskan native roots. The performance will take place on February 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

A firm commitment will be required from people and shows will be selected from those who will commit! It is a long commitment but it is so worth your time. Please come and find out more.

Emily Johnson of Catalyst Dance will return to present Niicugni, the second installment that included The Thank You Bar last October.

Niicugni—the word—is a directive to pay attention, to listen. Niicugni the dance quietly compels such attentiveness through its layering of multiple dances, live music, stories, and histories. There will be one performance only, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 adults; $5 for students (18-). Tickets are available in advance at www.tix.com. There will be no late seating! A specific rehearsal schedule for Roald Dahl’s fantasy adventure, dramatized by Richard R. George will be determined by role. Auditions are open to grades 1 and up. This production will require large community involvement in set, costume, puppetry, scenic painting, video and sound. Please consider being part of the backstage magic!

Tickets are also on sale now for Monroe Crossing, September 3, 2015! It’s gonna be a party, so make sure you are there. This group has sold out in the past, get your tickets early!
