Connie Cummins has been named the new forest supervisor on the Superior National Forest.
Cummins brings a wealth of experience, including time as the district ranger on the LaCroix Ranger District. She is coming to the Superior National Forest from the Fremont-Winema National Forest in Lakeview, Oregon where she has been the forest supervisor since 2014.
Before moving west, Cummins spent most of her career in the Eastern Region of the Forest Service. She worked as a cooperative education student in 1980. Then, after graduating in 1983 from Purdue University, she moved into a permanent forester position on the Washburn District of the Chequamegon National Forest.
Cummins transferred to the White Mountain National Forest in 1986 as a forester then moved to the Chippewa National Forest to serve as the forest planner and environmental coordinator. Beginning in 1990, she held a series of district ranger positions, including five years on the Mio District of the Huron-Manistee National Forest, followed by nine years on the LaCroix District of the Superior National Forest, then 10 years on the Great Divide District of the Chequamegon- Nicolet (with two years as the combined ranger for Great Divide and Washburn).
Said Cummins, “While I have thoroughly enjoyed my short time in the west and its many opportunities and challenges, I am very excited to be returning to the Midwest and to a forest which holds a special place in my heart.” She is also excited to once again be close to family, saying, “My daughter lives in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and my son resides in Duluth. I am happily looking forward to experiencing some family time as well as dusting off my cross-country skis, lacing up my trail shoes and hitting the trails and lakes of northern Minnesota.”
Cummins will fill the forest supervisor position formerly occupied by Brenda Halter, who retired in June. She plans to assume her new duties in August. In the interim, Deputy Forest Supervisor Richard Periman will serve as acting forest supervisor while Shawn Olson, the Forest Service Eastern Region’s appeals and litigation coordinator, will serve as acting deputy forest supervisor.
