When Kim Nelson saw that the Cook County Senior Center was looking for a program coordinator, at first she was reluctant to send in her resume.
Nelson, a Grand Marais resident, knew she had the credentials to fill the job requirements, but she has worked about 12 hours per week the past two years as secretary for the Evangelical Free Church and it’s a job she has enjoyed.
“I like working with the pastor, the kids, the youth group, the church. I’m pretty good at seeing things that get started get done. That’s important. I’m going to miss working here, but I felt God was leading me to a new challenge.”
A cancer survivor, Nelson has had a series of good check-ups, feels good, and she felt ready to take on a bigger job.
“I gave my resume to Bev Green, told her about my health—which she knew about—and she hired me. I can’t wait to start,” she said.
Nelson was in charge of a small park in Minneapolis at age 17. In Tofte, she was activities director and events coordinator for Bluefin and Surfside on Lake Superior. At Caribou Highlands she worked at the front desk and also served as the activities director. Kim has worked as a para at the school, served on the Library and Grand Marais Playhouse boards, and for one year worked at Naniboujou in programming.
“I know how to write grants and conduct fundraisers and I like interacting with people of all ages. I don’t know many of the people who go to the center right now, but that will come with experience.”
Bev Green, Senior Center director is excited for Kim to start. “She is transitioning in slowly as she finishes her duties with her current job,” Green said.
Kim is married to Tim Nelson, Cook County Land Service director. The couple has four grown children, Tiffany, Misha, Grace, and Ian.
