Craig and Lynn Schulte sold Marathon Gas Station to Satinder (Sam) and Sarabjit Bains on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

For the Schulte’s, the sale concludes a 27-year run of ownership of the former SA Gas Station that became Marathon Gas Station last year. It was a happy, bittersweet moment for the couple who have worked long and hard to build the business up.

“I’m not sure what I will do next for work,” said Craig, who serves on the Grand Marais City Council, PUC and Rec Park boards. In the near future, the couple will have time to visit their grandkids and two daughters who live in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

For Sam, January 5 marks a new beginning in a place he calls “My retirement town.”

Sam and his wife Sarabjit recently purchased a home in Grand Marais, moving from the warm confines of San Jose, California. Initially, the couple came from Punjab, India, with Sam moving to the U.S. in 1996 and his wife following two years later. The couple has two children, a son born in 2001 and a daughter born in 2002. “Both kids are in university,” said Satinder. “My son is in his second year at San Jose State majoring in physics, and my daughter is in her third year at Fresno University, majoring in biology.”

Over the next month, Craig Schulte will stay and help with the transition.

As for Mrs. Bains, she will take care of the accounts and bookwork at the gas station and continue with the paperwork associated with the couple’s trucking business.

“We truck produce from California to Fargo, North Dakota and into Minnesota,” said Sam.

When asked if he was going to make any changes to the station, Sam smiled and said he was going to offer Indian food. “We are going to bring a food truck onto the property and sell Indian food this coming summer.”

But before then, Sam said that once things have settled down, he will start offering free samples of Indian food to the locals.

In addition to owning the gas station, Satinder said, “We wanted to bring something extra to the community. Something new.”
