The Boundary Waters Advisory (BWA) Committee and McKenzie Products have unveiled a new hiking map for the Eagle Mountain Trail in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Brule Lake Trail. The map also includes a new campsite on Fishhook Lake, which is the result of a two-year collaborative effort between the U.S. Forest Service and the BWA committee.
This new map should make it easier for hikers and tourists to find their way around what is Minnesota’s highest point, as hikers have been forced to buy two canoeing maps to hike the trail.
“Each spring I would take the two maps covering the trails and cut away two thirds of it with a scissors,” said BWA president Martin Kubik. “I then would tape the remaining pieces together to make it easier to take in and out of my pocket. I no longer have to do so.”
Measuring 12×15-inches, it retains the map scale that BWCAW canoers are familiar with. It is printed on Polyart, a waterproof, tear resistant synthetic paper.
Kubik approached McKenzie Products owner Rod McKenzie about forming a single map after the two collaborated on past projects. “The BWA is grateful for our continued partnership with McKenzie Products,” said Kubik. “Their continued dedication shows there are many different ways to contribute to preserving what is truly a treasure in northern Minnesota.”
The “Eagle Mountain/Brule Lake map” can be bought from McKenzie Products, info@bwcamaps.com, or by calling 1-800-749- 2113. The map is also available at the Lake Superior Trading Post in Grand Marais.
Martin Kubik founded the BWA Committee in 2002 to help the Forest Service maintain wilderness hiking trails. He is a past recipient of several environmental awards and most recently he received a 3M Community Volunteer Award. He is employed at 3M as a digital printing specialist.
