Devyn entered his deer in the contest earlier this week, taking the lead from Deb Vannet of Hovland, who bagged a 240-pound buck early in the hunting season. The contest runs through Nov. 20.

Hovland hunter Deb Vannet’s 240-pound field dressed buck looked like it was going to be tough to beat, but Devyn Deschampe brought in one that was heavier. His buck tipped the scales at Buck’s Hardware Hank in Grand Marais at 244 pounds.

With his entry Deschampe, from Grand Portage, now is the leader in Buck’s Big Buck Contest.

Vannet registered her deer at Buck’s early in the Minnesota firearm deer-hunting season while Deschampe’s deer was entered in the middle of the contest.

Not only does Deschampe’s entry top the field in Cook County, as reported in the Duluth News Tribune on November 13, but also his deer was far bigger than any of the bucks entered in three other contests held in Lake and St. Louis counties.

Kennedy Soehren, Tomah, Wisconsin, leads the antler-spread division. His buck’s antlers were measured at 23 inches across. Kennedy took the lead from Dan Deschampe, Grand Portage, whose buck’s antlers measured 21 inches.

The winner of the heaviest (largest dressed weight) buck will receive a new rifle. Half of the entry money will go to the hunter who brought in the deer with the biggest antler spread, and the other half of the money will go to the winner of the drawing, which is pulled from the pool of applicants who paid $10 each to enter. This year there were 380 entries.

The contest wraps up on Sunday, November 20, the last day of the Minnesota firearm season.
