COOK COUNTY – The filing period for the November election for the school and hospital boards ends Tuesday, August 16. There will be at least one new school board member and one contested school board race at mid-point in the filing. (This story was submitted Monday night.)

Independent school district 166 (Cook County)

There will be a new person filling the district 1 school board seat (Grand Portage, Hovland and Magney precincts). Theresa Donovan has filed to replace Debra White. White is a candidate for the county board after serving on the school board since 2011. In district 3 (Grand Marais West and Cascade precincts) incumbent Rena Rogers is being challenged by Kim Nelson. District 5 incumbent Dan Shirley has told the NewsHerald that he will run for another term. That district includes the Schroeder, Tofte, Lutsen and Pike Lake precincts.

North Shore Health

Two of the three incumbents on the North Shore Health board have said they will be filing for re-election to the hospital board. They are Patty Winchell-Dahl (district 1) and Randy Wiitala (district 5). As of press time district 3 incumbent Steven Nielsen could not be reached for comments. The five-member hospital board is elected using the same district lines as the school board. North Shore Health is a county owned hospital, one of fourteen hospital districts in Minnesota that has a publicly elected board.

The hospital and school district each have five member boards whose members serve four-year terms.

Candidates for both boards must file an Affidavit of Candidacy with the Cook County Auditor and pay a filing fee. More information on the elections can be found on the Cook County government web site and the web sites of North Shore Health and Independent School District 166.

The county is divided into fourteen election precincts which are the basis for the five districts. Only the residents in the districts elect their representatives to the County, School and Hospital boards.
