Ann Marie Mershon of Grand Marais announces the publication of her newest book, You must only love them: Lessons learned in Turkey.
The book delves into the soul of Turkey — its people, its history, its terrain. Though initially nervous about diving into such a different culture, Mershon said she learned to embrace its differences from her own. Through interactions with her students, weekend explorations around Istanbul and travels to distant parts of of the country she grew to love her new home, viewing the world through a new lens.
The book is part travelogue, part romance, and part adventure, and is Mershon’s heartfelt account of her discoveries during her seven years in Istanbul.
A retired English teacher, Mershon lives on Devil Track Lake with her husband Jerry and their two dogs. She began writing when her two sons left home 20 years ago. She penned a weekly newspaper column for five years as well as numerous articles for newspapers and magazines, and has now published three books. Her first was Britta’s Journey – An Emigration Saga, written about the emigration of Eleanor Stone’s family that settled near her home. After living in Istanbul a few years, she produced her second book, Istanbul’s Bazaar Quarter, Backstreet Walking Tours. This guidebook was a collaboration with Edda Renker Weissenbacher, a Turk who guided small groups on walking tours through Istanbul.
The new book is available through Amazon as an e-book or a paperback, and is also for sale at Drury Lane, Birchbark Books & Gifts and Lake Superior Trading Post in Grand Marais. Visit her website at annmariemershon.com.
